Significant progress in large-scale application of micro-seismic monitoring technology

Technical barriers were broken down in velocity model optimization, incident identification, first arrival pickup, and real-time on-site positioning. The micro-seismic real-time monitoring software with our proprietary intellectual property was developed realizing integrated acquisition, processing and interpretation for downhole and surface micro-seismic monitoring data.

With respect to data acquisition, a detectable distance analysis method for micro-seismic incident was innovated based on multiple attributes such as micro-seismic origin mechanism, signal speed and receiving conditions.

In regards to data processing, VSP-based velocity model optimization technique, velocity model correction technique for joint P-wave and S-wave, perforation signal-based micro-seismic incident identification and pickup techniques, integrated P-wave and S-wave time-difference method, and micro-seismic positioning techniques with multi-scale energy scanning were developed.

As for data interpretation, technological innovations were made in ellipse fitting-based fracture morphology characterization, comprehensive interpretation integrated with multi-discipline data, and micro-seismic detection for natural faults.

The technology was used in a number of oil and gas fields, and shale gas/CBM blocks since 2012, completing downhole monitoring of more than 300 wells and surface monitoring and integrated downhole-surface monitoring of over 10 wells for nearly 20 clients. Satisfactory results were seen in more than 3,000 fractured sections, facilitating the fracturing operation at vertical, cluster and horizontal wells and achieving a total cost saving of more than RMB300 million.
