Technological breakthroughs in “three-quality” logging evaluation supported the E&P of unconventional oil and gas

The logging evaluation technologies focusing on source rock quality, reservoir quality and operation quality, as well as the corresponding logging data processing and evaluation software were developed and used for exploration and development of unconventional oil and gas.

Highlights:

  • 08The “Seven Characteristic Parameters” concept for unconventional oil and gas reservoirs was put forward for the first time together with the “Seven Characteristic Parameters” calculation method. Particularly, a new method to characterize the static brittleness index was worked out solving the worldwide problem on the accurate calculation of static brittleness index. And the shale gas bilayer adsorption theory and high-pressure adsorption gas content calculation model were established, which effectively improved the accuracy of deep shale gas content calculation.
  • New logging calculation model for hydrocarbon generation and expulsion efficiency was set up for the first time. The technology for full-depth profile source-rock quality evaluation was developed.
  • Integrated macro-micro reservoir evaluation technology, which effectively solved the problems in fine evaluation and productivity level prediction of tight reservoir was developed.
  • New evaluation technique for logging operation focusing on compressibility index was developed. “Sweet spot” logging evaluation method integrating reservoir quality and operation quality was developed.

These technologies were applied in more than 1,000 exploration and production wells for tight oil in the Ordos, Songliao and Junggar basins and shale gas in South Sichuan. The interpretation coincidence rate for tight oil was increased by 26%, while that for shale gas reached 94%.
